We’re a couple of weeks into the new year so even if you’ve busted a resolution or two there’s still a lot of time to set your business up for a great year. One way to do that is to set and track goal progress.

What is the top goal for your business this year?

Hopefully, you’ve written it down and shared it with your team. Sharing your business vision and goals is a great way to build teamwork. It helps keep everyone on the same page with a common set of goals to achieve. One idea to get your team more involved in your business goals is to create an annual goal and four supporting quarterly objectives.

Make sure you connect the dots on how the staff’s individual job helps the business achieve its goals. Also be sure to share how they benefit when the business succeeds. Spell out what’s in it for them…is it job security, a raise or bonus, career opportunity, further education, new equipment or job environment improvements? All of these are more motivating to your team than you increasing your own pay. This will be their assumption if you don’t share the ways they can benefit when the company succeeds in meeting goals.

The next question to answer is:

How will you know when the goal has been achieved?

An important part of goal setting is ensuring each goal is measurable. We’ve created a Business Goal KPI Cheat Sheet to help you decide on objective measures for typical business goals. Once those are in place the next step is to answer these questions:

What is the objective measure that you will use to monitor your progress?

How frequently will you measure and review progress?

Is there a fun way to track and post progress for your team?

Your team will put a priority on what you focus on so if your goal is really important find a fun way to keep it visible. We’ve all seen the big gauges that are posted for fund-raising goals. Create something similar and make updating progress a big event in team meetings.

The frequency of tracking progress will vary depending on the goal you set. Consider the following schedule:

  • Weekly – update your visual key measure
  • Monthly – during you team meetings discuss progress and celebrate achievements; ask for input on changes to systems that could bring better results
  • Quarterly – confirm priority of goal and share benefits with your team; waiting a full year to receive rewards makes it hard to keep staff motivated so use smaller and more frequent rewards

An important key to success is consistency of sharing results. You don’t have to do this alone, assign the weekly updates to a manager or lead to post. Investing time in monitoring and sharing goal progress has great team-building benefits. Keep it simple by selecting measures that are easy to obtain timely from your point-of-sale software.

Finally, keep in mind that what gets rewarded will get your staff’s focus. You need to maintain a balance of quality care, customer service, financial results and staff engagement for overall business success. One tip is to set minimum standards to be met in each area for any goal progress reward to be earned.

You are not alone in moving your business forward. Share goals and objectives with your team and have fun together in the new year making forward progress.
